What makes ALOXI different?
ALOXI® is an antinausea
medication known as a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that prevents chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) after certain
chemotherapies. It works by blocking the antinausea signal to the brain. With some
5-HT3 drugs, patients need to take multiple doses after chemotherapy
to help prevent nausea and vomiting. Not so with ALOXI.
Just one dose of ALOXI may help prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy.
A single IV dose before treatment can give you up to 5 days of strength against
certain types of CINV.*
This means you may not need to take any additional oral medications for antinausea
on the days following chemotherapy.
For certain types of chemotherapy, ALOXI effectively controls:
- Acute CINV: occurs on the same day as chemotherapy treatment, especially
within the first 4 to 16 hours
- Delayed CINV: occurs on the days following chemotherapy, usually within 24
to 72 hours
Better than Zofran® for prevention of acute and delayed vomiting
In a study comparing ALOXI with Zofran®, an earlier 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, ALOXI
was found to be better at preventing CINV caused by moderately emetogenic chemotherapy
(MEC), or chemotherapy that is moderately likely to cause CINV. The chart (Figure
1) below shows that ALOXI was better in the acute phase, better in the
delayed phase, and better overall.
(Figure 1) Patients who experienced no vomiting and did not need additional medication
to prevent vomiting after chemotherapy1

In the same study, ALOXI was found to be better than Zofran at preventing delayed
nausea on days 3 through 5 following chemotherapy (Figure 2).
