What is ALOXI?

ALOXI is an antiemetic medication. It belongs to a class of drugs called 5HT3 receptor antagonists. ALOXI is used in adults to help prevent nausea and vomiting on the day of chemotherapy that is highly likely to cause nausea and vomiting and up to 5 days following chemotherapy that is moderately likely to cause nausea and vomiting.

Many patients who are given ALOXI are able to go through cycles of treatment with less nausea and vomiting. It is important to try to prevent these symptoms before they start. Before you start chemotherapy, ask your doctor about ALOXI.

How is ALOXI administered?

ALOXI is given as a single intravenous (IV) injection about 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy, often through the same IV line that will be used for your chemotherapy.*

* The infusion line should be flushed with normal saline before and after administration of the ALOXI.

What are the potential side effects?

The most common side effects of ALOXI in the prevention of CINV are headache and constipation. These are not all the side effects from ALOXI. For more information, ask your healthcare professional or see the Full Product Information for ALOXI.

Who should not receive ALOXI?

Do not take ALOXI if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in ALOXI.

The ingredients are as follows:

  • Active ingredient: palonosetron hydrochloride
  • Inactive ingredients: mannitol, disodium edetate, and citrate buffer in water

For certain types of chemotherapy, ALOXI effectively controls:

  • Acute CINV: occurs on the same day as chemotherapy treatment, especially within the first 24 hours for chemotherapies moderately and highly likely to cause nausea and vomiting.
  • Delayed CINV: occurs on the days following chemotherapy, usually within 24 to 72 hours for chemotherapies moderately likely to cause nausea and vomiting.

Indication

ALOXI is used in adults to help prevent the nausea and vomiting that can happen on the day of treatment with certain chemotherapies or occur days later following chemotherapies moderately likely to cause nausea and vomiting.
