Empower yourself against CINV
It is important to try to prevent CINV. Nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy may result
in unwanted weight loss, dehydration, malnutrition, and, in some cases, hospitalization.
In order to decrease your chances of getting CINV, you may wish to avoid:
- Solid foods immediately before and after treatment
- Caffeine and alcohol
- Spicy or greasy food
- Favorite foods on days you feel queasy so they don’t become triggers for nausea
- Unpleasant odors, such as smoke or strong-smelling perfume
- Lying flat for at least 2 hours following meals
The following list of activities can help empower you and may even help keep you
from getting CINV.
Remember to:
- Take your medications as prescribed
- Drink liquids
- Eat bland foods for snacks such as dry toast or soda crackers
- Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day
- Notify your doctor immediately if vomiting is severe or you cannot keep anything
down
- Try engaging in relaxing activities such as reading, yoga, watching TV, or listening
to music
- Try additional therapies such as self-hypnosis, guided imagery, progressive muscle
relaxation, acupuncture, or acupressure
